What is the problem? They are peaceful citizens exercising their Second Amendment rights. Why is anyone concerned? What is there to fear? Are they likely to break the law and murder someone? No the criminals won't care about breaking some gun law. Good, honest citizens are NEVER the problem.

With the current rate at which males are being effeminized throughout the west (and east, for that matter), I don't think op-ed author Jennifer Carlson will have much to worry about in a few years.

As we found out with the Boy Scouts last week, with their banning of automatic and semi-automatic water pistols, and their new motto of "Hands Up! Don't Squirt!," Western Civilization, IMHO, is doomed.

My guns accessorize me and I don't leave home without it. Things aren't getting better so just like in the Boy Scouts "Always Be Prepared".

A lot of it for me is self protection. Whether it be in town or camping with the family just a sense of security.

Yeah, but the left always try to change the reason why we carry.

That was what annoyed me about the whole thing. Making it about social insecurities ect. It's personal protection and it's wise to learn to defend yourself. I liked the guy that compared it to bringing his wallet with him. Never know when you'll need it so just make sure you have it!

Just having the ability to level the playing field like we discussed in the other thread. As long as you respect it and don't try to take a selfie with it pointed at your dome...

Interesting but it really is just a plug for her book. She's a sociologist looking into why the there was such a push for ccw in the past few years versus say 50 years ago. I didn't see anything that suggested there was an issue with carrying at all or why we shouldn't. If you think you haven't been studied before by sociologists before and lumped in to large groups that probably have nothing to do with you through statistical studies you are kidding yourselves.

"We want to understand why Americans do not just own but also carry guns"

Really? Because I am sitting here racking my brain trying to figure out why people don't.

It might help if we could gather a few anti-gunners and run them through some rat mazes or something, and do some test and analysis.

My best guess is you are just so irresponsible and without any real sense of self or purpose that you prefer to be taken care of...maybe it is some sort of Peter Pan syndrome that you just don't want to grow up....you know, we might be on to something with that. Now if we could only get that maze going...

To answer the question of why do I....because I am an adult, and that's what adults do.

haha dutz i think you hit it on the head for a lot of it. They prefer to live in a bubble and have everybody else take care of them, rely on the government ect... Taking care of yourself requires responsibility, owning up to your actions, and it's a lot of work!

It is to protect the lives of my wife and child, either at home or out. I refuse to let any one harm them. I will take any precautions I can.

Well, as I read this, lots of questions popped into my head; finally I started at the beginning and wrote down some points:
1. Violent States vs Violent Cities. I think States are not overall violent; it's usually the cities or large groups of people where crime occurs - natural for humans to lash out at eachother when in close proximity / bound to happen!
2. Masculine Duty? How about women?
3. Seems guns are first choice protection and the first to reach for in a conflict situation. How about a can of pepper spray? Yeah, I know, better not give the bad guy a second chance. How about that rape scenario: I think using a can of mace would be more effective; with gun as an immediate second. I know this point is open for debate.
4. Hero role? No, one shouldn't see oneself as a hero nor strive to be. Hero'ship comes after the deed is done. Some gun owners can take things too far and actually escalate things.
5. Seems the pro-gun crowd should really adapt one PRIMARY mantra: "We own and carry guns because the 2nd Amendment gives us that right. The 2nd Amendment is there for us to empower us to object to an overreaching government". I'm tired of the over-analyzing, the hunting debate, the "god given right" speech, etc. The NRA should really come up with ONE slogan around what I put here.

Just my two cents.

Well, giving the LA Times any credibility in the first place is a problem. The question as posed presupposes the "correct" answer. Only being a naturalized citizen, I may be wrong, but I think that the opening statement that carrying guns did occur before 1987. One could also ask "why do narcissistic reporters feel that anyone cares about their opinions ?"

They did.

"Stand and Fight"

Stand and fight the enemies of our country, stand and fight the politicians (which today are the enemies of our country), and stand and fight those who would inflict violence up us and our loved ones.

The slogan leaves open your reasons.

It also goes further and embodies the essence of the rugged individualist that built this country. We stand and fight apathy, we stand and fight the elements, we stand and fight all enemies - human, animal, situations, and the enemy within our own hearts and souls.

You can sum it up in the last words Pat Riley's dad said to him just before he died.

“Just remember what I always taught you. Somewhere, some place, sometime, you are going to have to plant your feet, stand firm, and make a point about what you are and what you believe in, and then kick some a**. And when that time comes, you do it.”

Did anyone happen to watch the Bill O'Reilly show on Friday? It was an hour of of the obvious that gun control doesn't work. He used Chicago as an example several times. He mentioned Chicago being in POTUS's home town has some of the strictest gun control in the country and has over 800 shooting year to date....20% higher than last year at this time.
