They're very nice. Thick receivers and bull barrels make for a very easy to shoot rifle. They're like a Romanian PSL on steroids in the 23" variety. They also have 27", 20", and 16" carbine models. When they're in stock Atlantic Firearms is usually the go to place to get one. They sell out real fast over there. The Zastava M91 would give the 23" Vepr a run for its money. I wouldn't want to be in the crosshairs of either rifle.

For the scope mount get a RS Regulate one that goes on the side rail on the rifle's receiver. Their widely held to be the best AK scope mount. With it you can use any scope rings that mount to a 1913 rail. You can disconnect it from the rifle, and unless you bang it around, will maintain zero when field stripping and cleaning the rifle.

Ok, at McMiller today I saw another VEPR today, this one was in Russian 5.45x39. Much shorter barrel. Guy said he really liked it. At first I thought it was an AK but the distinctive stock caught my interest. Seemed like a very accurate gun. He was just finishing up his session, and didn't have any more ammo for it, otherwise he said he would let me shoot a few rounds.

Are these VEPR's replacing the AK?

No, they're just a name brand for one of the manufacturers of the AK style rifle. Internally they're just like any other AK and major parts like the bolt carrier, recoil spring, dust cover, and FCG are all interchangeable. Each manufacturer adds their own little touches to it to make it "their own" in other areas. Molot's is to use a RPK style receiver and bull barrel but it's still an AK. The 5.45x39mm version you saw being used is the Molot version of the AK-74. The style of stock they use for the ones imported into the US is so that they can get around the 922 compliance issues. Since it uses that style of stock they can market it as a "hunting or sporting" rifle. If they imported it in the standard AK look they would have to have 5 US made parts on it. That's why you see Zastava rifles imported by Century using Tapco triggers and magazines for example. Izmash took a different route with the Saiga AKs. They replaced the AK stock and pistol grip with a stock like what you would see on a Remington 700. Those ones are now on the Obama ban list as they are made by Izmash. Back during the Soviet days both plants were state owned and made standard style AKs for the government. Think of it as how Remington, Springfield, Winchester, and GE all made the M1 during WWII.

Here's a pic of a Vepr converted back to the standard AK look:

It looks close to what I saw...but the back end of the VEPR has 45 slant at the bottom of the butt stock. And I do appreciate the education on the these Russian designed rifles.
Like I said I was really impressed with the VEPR 23" barrel 7.62x54R rifle I shot a few weeks ago. The couple of rounds I fired makes me want one.

If you look closely there is an adapter there that squares off the rear of the receiver allowing the standard stamped AK stock to be installed. There are Veprs that have the standard "squared" rear to the receiver but they are rare in the US. The ones that did make it here tend to be older models. The vast majority here have the angled rear like the one you fired and require the adapter for changing out the stock to something else.

For fun here's a post from AK Operator's Union Local 47-74's Facebook page showing Mrs. Rob Ski, aka Ula, firing a modified 16" carbine version of the 7.62x54r Vepr, aka "The Beast":

Thanks for the great video. The one I shot was pretty much new out of the box. It didn't have a muzzle break/flash suppressor. And the recoil was no more than any .308 with the wood stock. It takes a lot for a gun to impress me, this one did.

I've personally been considering getting one of the 16" versions like seen in that video. The 16" version is darn accurate, too. Rob Ski was easily ringing steel at 600m with the same rifle seen in the video. It has a slight advantage in a SHTF scenario of being able to be used for CQB as it's carbine length. I think I would keep the stock and handguard that comes on it but refinish it a different color. I personally think a dark cherry wood stain would look good on it. The only real changes would be adding an optics mount and either a flash hider or muzzle brake. Here's what the unmodified 16" one looks like:

It probably looks similar to the 5.45x39mm one you saw that guy with, if his was stock.

After watching this video it makes me want to finish rebuilding my older AK. I guess its time to start looking into more new parts for it!

Now's a good time. Magpul just came out with a really good polymer side folding stock for on stamped AKs.

Thanks for the tip. I was not even looking at Magpul. I have used Fab Defense/Mako Group for most of my parts.

https://www.magpul.com/products/buttstoc...ov-s-stock

It's side folding, collapsible, and has available cheek risers.

I'm thinking about getting one of the MOE handguards for on my C39 but it will probably take Dremel work to get it to fit.

I started on accessorizing mine a while back but did not complete it. I jumped over to my AR and started on one then one lead to two and then to three and finally slowed down on number six. So it is only right to start the same procedure with the AK platform. Lets see what the wife says about that..HA! LOL! ThumbupHelp

The nice thing is with the AK platform gaining more traction than it had a couple years ago more accessories are becoming available. As more US makers start making their own variants that can only continue to grow.

I have to say, I was never enamored with the AK line. But the C39 and the VEPR have changed my attitude toward them. They are very high quality, fun to shoot platforms. But having shot the VEPR and being it is in the Russian 7.62x54R it has become number one on my want list.

If you get the chance try one of DDI's stamped receiver AKs in 7.62x39mm. They're very good as well.
