The Vepr is a Russian AK. They're built using heavier barrels and receivers than the standard AKs. The reason they're not on the banned list is because they're built by Molot and not Izmash. They also come into the country "sporterized" but are easy to convert back to a proper AK look and feel. 7.62x54R Vepr:5.45x39mm/7.62x39mm AK::AR-10:AR-15.

hmmm... The VEPR I shot had a 23" barrel, beautiful wood stock and mild recoil. It was of better quality than any AK I have ever seen. I REALLY liked the rifle a lot. Fit a bi-pod and scope, and this would be one hell of an impressive rifle. So much so I may even have to buy one for myself... Ugh...

It shoots better because of the thicker "bull" barrel that Molot uses in the Vepr. Atlantic Firearms sells a 23" 7.62x54R Vepr with SVD style wood stocks that is around 1 MOA, which is darn good for an AK. They also make the standard AKM and AK-74 style AKs and a 16" in 7.62x54R. Rob Ski from AK Operators Union Local 47-74 has a 16" in 7.62x54R that Atlantic loaned him for reviewing and he loves the thing.

Since that video was released he has put one of the new Magpul Zhukov handguards on it. The problem with the 7.62x54R Veprs is that here aren't any quality extended mags available for it so you're pretty much stuck with the 5 round mags.

I'll just say I was extremely impressed with how the rifle handled. It had less recoil than an AK in my opinion. It was really accurate from kneeling and standing, well balanced and issue free. What was more impressive is that we were using old spam can Russian ammo. It was no where near as heavy as it looked even with the wood furniture. Lets just say I was looking at a C39, but even though this costs a few hundred more, I wouldn't need another caliber. My buddy did have one 10 round magazine. I thought it was factory. Really impressive QUALITY on the rifle.

I am resisting buying one, but it has filtered to the TOP of my gun wish list.

When Atlantic Firearms has them in stock they're about $100 more than they charge for the C39v2. BTW, if getting a C39 I recommend the v2 over the v1. The v2 has a better barrel, finish, and FCG than the v1. Anyway here's Atlantic's page for the 23" Vepr that they have in stock for $850:

I happen to be like you and like the looks of the stock furniture. I think I would refinish it but I like the overall design of it. In case you were wondering, the receiver has that slight bulge under the ejection port because it uses a RPK style receiver, which is basically a thicker AK receiver made to withstand the pressure and heat of sustained full-auto fire that one sees from a machinegun and not a battle rifle. The bulge is part of the receivers re-enforcing.
