BOB Content, FIRST Item... Maps! - BelieveIn308 - 12-10-2014

And while we are on the topic of bugging out (which should be a last choice, unless you are part of group), you will need EXCELLENT maps of the area you are going to be passing though.

Fortunately, there is an EXCELLENT source for such maps.

www.mytopo.com which sells a variety of custom, water proof maps of any area in the USA, to different scales. These can include the names of property owners as well.

You will need to know where stream and rivers are. You will need to know the back roads and where bridges are. You will need to plan where you are going.

This belongs in EVERY BOB, as well as in your Bug In location and Retreat.

Illinois Topo and Land Ownership SD Card
Turn your iPhone, iPad, or Android into a fully featured GPS with the Illinois Topo Maps and Land Ownership SD Card

Does anyone have an iPhone or iPad that accepts an SD?

I don't think any tablets do unless it is a MicroSD card. They do make apps with topo maps though.

Also, many counties have topo/plat maps available online. Example: Kenosha

I have this one.

Although electronics are not to be relied for the long term.

I would wager that in 6 months to a year most electronics non-functional. Some may have solar panels that can recharge some of them, but I'd bet most are toast long term. Think old school on BOB contents, plus weight. Think Solar panels, Rechargeable AA & AAA and small power packs. More than that requires a lot of space and sunny days.

Everyone may want to check out a weatherproof notepad along with a Fisher Space Pen and refill's for both. Check out the link at Amazon.

Rite In the Rain

RDA may want to contact the company about stocking Rite In The Rain products. I purchased some at REI a few years ago.

I agree, Rite In The Rain make great products.

In SHTF paper will be a fairly valuable commodity. This paper even more so...

Anyone want to speculate on the impact I'd any on the GPS satellite array of the SHTF? I have a Garmin that can navigate and has a digital compass. Thanks.

RE: BOB Content, FIRST Item... Maps! - BelieveIn308 - 12-19-2014

Depends if the satellites remain online. I'd wager they would for a long while. You could use solar to recharge the Garmin.

Of course an EMP event might fry them immediately. I'd still want a quality map of the immediate area.

Depends which SHTF. Satellite transmission can be jammed and shut down with the correct command.

Survival is survival. The same rules apply as going into the back country. Never go out without an accurate map, good compass, and the knowledge to use them no matter what else you have.

Whenever you hear a story that has has the words "lost for <<# of>> days" then you know they didn't have one or more of those things.

RE: BOB Content, FIRST Item... Maps! - Ringo3632 - 12-20-2014

Very true. I've been wanting a quality map but never bothered this far. I used maps a good bit traveling with my friend and his dad and brother in the boundary Waters and in Canada. I always had fun and it was good to learn. Now to just actually get a good one.

I bought a DeLorme GPS a few years ago. It cam with software to print my own maps. I can even view things in 3D. This is a GPX track of our trip to Glacier.
