This is a “Punt Gun”- used for duck hunting, it had the potential to kill 50 birds in one fell swoop- it was banned it the late 1860’s.

According to Guns & Ammo it was designed to handle special paper or brass shotshells.

Weren't these mounted on boats? I seem to remember reading an article were it talked about how the recoil pushed the boat quite a bit.

Reminds me of those old anti-tank rifles from around WWI to WWII.

Hate to think what one round costs to fire that thing... No wonder the duck on the menu is so expensive...

The one above looks to be a muzzle loader. I'm going by the fact that it has a side mount hammer lock and what looks like might be a percussion cap nipple under the dropped hammer. If I'm right, pack some powder and shoot down the barrel and let fly.

I heard a very similar story.

What we know as the Metra fox line was originally created to get ducks back and forth from the chain down to the city. (atleast one of the big reasons for it)

Can you imagine the recoil on that? Might break bones and cripple ya, 50 ducks, and you duck hunting career is over!
