What are the best AK47 magazines... - BelieveIn308 - 08-09-2015

What do you guys think are the best AK47 magazines? After spending yesterday at McMiller shooting two AK47 with a buddy, I can tell you as much as I love Pmags for AR-15's, Pmags for AK's are not very good. He had a coiple metal magazines and they were not much better. He had one Romanian magazine that functioned well. He had a couple Tapco's that were worse than the Pmag's What is a battle RELIABLE AK magazine that doesn't cost a fortune?

Combloc surplus are the best mags to get. Romanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Yugo/Serb, etc. They all function well and can be had for good prices with a little shopping around. Russian Bakelite mags are also good but extremely hard to find anymore and if you do they carry a premium price. The Romanian 75 round drum mag is also a good buy. If you catch one on sale you can get one for around $70. Avoid Korean mags and drums or ones just marked as Asian. The Chinese mags are good but are in the same boat as the Russian Bakelite. There are a couple US makers that make good steel mags but they're not as cheap as the Combloc surplus. Promag also sucks so avoid them. I have one of their steel mags and it's worse than the Tapco poly mags I have.

hmmm... After just doing a little looking around on the internet, this seems to be an issue. A battle rifle is only as good as it's weakest component. You probably want at least a 12-16 reliable magazines. That's easy to do with an AR15 or PTR91, and $$$ with a M1A or FAL. I had not though about that as an issue with the AK47 till now...

Here's a couple of sites with Combloc mags for sale to give you an example:

The Bulgarian steel lined poly mags for $12.99 at the first link are good new mags for the price.

Great links... Prices are like $6-8 less than what I found!

I love my steel ones!

RE: What are the best AK47 magazines... - BelieveIn308 - 08-10-2015

Which ones do you have bradberry?

I am really thinking I want a CIA C39v2, but without reliable magazines, I may change my mind. I tried 6 magazines this weekend, and the two AK's had numerous failures to feed. And it was the magazines. I thought the Pmags were bad till he handed me a Tapco... How does a company like magpul (and really GREAT AR15 magazines), put out such an awful product?

RE: What are the best AK47 magazines... - rwhite135 - 08-10-2015

Like I said somewhere around here in one of the AK postings or ammo ones, Magpul understands that they screwed up and they're supposed to be releasing an improved version sometime in the near future that is steel re-enforced. Given how good their AK furniture that they just put out is, I believe that they're new mags will be better.

I forgot which plastic ones I have but the feed better into mine than the metal ones. The metal ones have a rib on the back. So when I just practice magazine changes that rib gets in the way

If you prefer polymer pick up the Bulgarian steel lined ones at the first link above. They're the best poly ones on the market.

There are no markings on mine. I bought my AK back in 1990 from my brother when he had his FFL. With it, he gave me about 20 magazines all wrap up in a brown wax paper and sealed in air tight packages. Back then he was buy weapons by the lot.

RE: What are the best AK47 magazines... - rwhite135 - 08-12-2015

Back then the rifle probably cost what $150-200?

$120.00

RE: What are the best AK47 magazines... - rwhite135 - 08-13-2015

$120 with 20 mags? Man, he gave you a great deal. What is it a Norinco MAK-90?

RE: What are the best AK47 magazines... - rwhite135 - 08-14-2015

The company at the second link I posted above just announced on Facebook that they're going to be selling some Russian Bakelite mags at a reasonable price. If they do I'd grab as many as you can. They are excellent mags that just aren't seen on the market very often.

OK, I ordered 4 x Bulgarian metal magazines from CDNNSports above, and I also ordered 1 x US Palm AK30 and 1 x Gibbs Matra as well, from another supplier just to test them out. My buddy had one of the Gibbs Matra and said it was very reliable, and the Palm has decent comments online, I figure I will try one.

Now of course, I will need the rifle... Smile

Haha you're doing it backwards and I like it. Lol when are you planning on being able to get it?

RE: What are the best AK47 magazines... - BelieveIn308 - 08-26-2015

Ringo, I gave RDA the special order, when I watched the free Knife Video... I am hoping for mid September! Some things you are going to need, like a sling and magazines. May as well find out what it likes... I will get like 3-4 different ammo's as well. I am already checking out optics mounts as well. And I may replace the wood furniture as well, if the stock is too short, but that can wait till I shoot a few rounds.

I'm not just buying a rifle, I'm buying the a weapons system. rwhite has been a great resource for a non-AK person.

From what I looked up of it I like it! It'll be fun to hear what you think of it as you go!
