Question. While driving to and from work is it legal to have my gun in a pocket holster between the drivers seat and console? While driving I keep it covered with a hat so it is not visible. Legally, do I need to keep it out of sight while driving or is it okay as long as it's in the pocket holster?

For Illinois,

I'm pretty sure from what I've heard it has to be IN the center console.. From what we went over in the class in the console is considered a case, so it's alright to have the gun and the magazine in there as long as they're separate. However, so far, the glove box is not considered to be a case (at least not officially in a trial), so it is not an ideal place to put it.

I don't know how that changes with the concealed carry permit though. If you have the permit I don't see why it would be an issue at all.

Well, the issue comes up now if you have to leave the firearm in the car. Let's say you have you are carrying and you stop at the post office. You can't take the firearm in USPS, so now you need to leave the firearm in the car. It must be locked and unloaded, therefore, taking the mag out, and the chambered round, and putting that in the center console, and locking the car doors will make you compliant with the law.

Thats interesting. It makes sense I guess, but even if you're a permit holder you can't have it in your car without you, unless it's broken down and following the general transport laws?

Thanks Rodney, and I've been trying to do the same Mike. I've taken everything except the second class which I have planned to do on the next weekend opening. So I've been trying to fill in all the gaps!

Mike have you taken a look at that book with all of the states carry laws? I was thinking of getting that and keeping it handy for a quick reference. My friend that travels a good bit did that and made notes on a map he stores on his glove box.

Hey Ringo, don't have book yet. But I do reference www.handgunlaw.us. It's a really good website. You can also sign up for e-mail alerts when there are changes or updates to any laws. The second class is really interesting due to the fact that you will learn lots about laws, etc.. Not sure if you are taking classes at RDA but if you do and you have Briggs as an instructor you will enjoy it. Remember to ask lots of questions and you definitely need a good quality OWB holster

I'm definitely taking it through RDA. I've done all my classes there so far, and I have the second concealed carry and the shot gun class on my to do list. I'm for sure going to check out that website as well. Email updates would be a really nice feature and keep you in tune if you're not paying attention for a little bit.

I do have the holster my XDs came with and I've been planning on using that. I do need to practice with it a little bit though. I've mostly been wearing a shoulder holster and IWB holster around the house trying to decide what I like best. But I did hear the OWB is best for the class.

I just completed my second CC class at RDA. This is a covered topic. The class as usual was excellent. Really good training all around. Knowledgeable instructors that seemed to care about proper form and function. Great hypothetical examples used in the training. Now I have to check if RDA has an advanced class. So many little tactical tricks and methods to practice. I will be practicing the holster draw and put away for weeks before I fell comfortable with it.

You really learn a lot in these 2 classes. But the next class for me is the shotgun class.

I'm doing the shotgun class as well. I just asked them to put one on order for me so it'll be perfect timing. Mike also just made a comment earlier today about taking one of their advanced classes. I didn't look into it yet since I have two already lined up to take. It is good to know that I can take a bit to try and practice what I've learned and be able to go back and have them help/correct what I'm doing as well as teach some new methods.
