So I figured this would be the best place for this topic. I was thinking about building (or purchasing) an AR-15 Pistol in the .300 AAC Blackout. I've heard some good reviews and opinions about the round in the AR platform. I wanted to have an AR pistol and at some point down the line I wanted to equip it with a suppressor. One article I was reading claimed the 300BLK was an excellent choice as you can purchase supersonic or subsonic ammunition depending on the flavor of the week.
anyone here with experience? Thoughts? Opinions?
I can understand 300 BLK as a caliber, but why the pistol?
I built a AR Pistol in 223 with a 7.5" Barrel and I love it. Is it loud,yes. Does it breath fire, yes. I built just because. My brother in-law asked me why and I told him that I had the parts so WHY NOT. My brother built a 10.5' pistol and I will probably follow up with one. The 300 AAC Blackout would, like you stated, give you options. One of my sons friends built a pistol (about a year or two ago) with 300 and loves it. They have not put a suppressor on it but they love it. Just pay attention to the gun laws with a lower receiver. In Oregon they do not need to be stamped "Pistol". All lowers, in Oregon are treated as pistols when doing the background. Now, you could do an 80% pistol?

The only few things I did not do on my build was add a 3 gun trigger, red dot, and a suppressor.

They make a great home defense firearm. They're small enough to maneuver through tight hallways and still provide good fire power. With an 8" barrel, a suppressed pistol is still smaller than a carbine with a 16" barrel. A sub-sonic load, when combined with a suppressor, can deliver firepower equal to between a .45 ACP and a light .357 Magnum load without the need for hearing protection out of the 8" pistol. With the ATF ruling braces can be shouldered, you also don't have to worry about the SBR tax-stamp and current brace offerings can provide a very stable shoulder and cheek weld. You also don't need a permission slip to take an AR pistol out of state unlike a SBR. That's just a couple of reasons why an AR pistol makes sense. The only AR I own is a pistol in 5.56x45mm with a 10.5" barrel and it lives next to my bed as my nightstand gun.
Ringo, if you are going to do the pistol in .300 AAC (aka Blackout), with a 10.5" or longer barrel, make sure you use a pistol length gas tube with it. Everyone I know or have seen do a video on them, building or reviewing, has said that they get better results with the pistol length gas tube vs the carbine length one, which is the exact opposite from a 10,5" pistol or SBR in 5.56x45mm. I've actually seen full length carbines with 16" barrels use a pistol length gas tube with .300 AAC.

RWhite135, thanks for the tip! Also you are on point with why I want to build it into a pistol. I already have a "Standard" AR-15 in 5.56 with a 16" barrel. So I thought the suppressed pistol would be a cool option to add to the home armory. The .300 AAC is because the good sized caliber, and the ability to purchase supersonic, or subsonic ammo.
N BradBerry, I definitively have to look up my exact rules for that... I just moved to Wisconsin so I need to get everything in order. i would like to do the 80% build though... we'll see where I'm at when i actually jump into building it.
Far as the buffer tubes, and pistol braces, do you guys have any thoughts on ones you'd recommend staying away from? I like those pistol buffer tubes... but I was thinking of aiming towards the brace
Also, BradBerry, you like that grip on the front of the AR you put a picture of? I haven't used one before, but found them intriguing
I did not buy the Hex 2 but only because it did not exist when I built this one. If I were going to use the Sig Brace, I would consider the Hex 2 BT. Another friend of my here locally recent bought the Hex 2 to specifically use it with the brace and he loves it.
Using an 80%'r would be the way to get around the "Pistol" Labeling on the receiver. Especially if it is a factor in your state. A friend of mine who owns a local gun store brought that issue to my attention as I was doing my research prior to my build. I have two 80%'s but have not done anything with them, "YET".
The pistol grip for me was a hard decision and one I struggled over. I wanted a grip that gave my large hand control. My son shot it and stated that for him, the grip was very comfortable. I still have a few other grips in my inventory but I have yet to find one that I like better for this built.
The trigger will get changed out down the line but that will happen only when I start shooting it more. I will also update the compensator down the road.
If I had the money, I think I would go with the Gear Head Works Tailhook Mod 2 brace. It's a collapsible brace, similar to how an AR stock functions, and is made from solid polymer. My 2nd choice would be the SB Tactical collapsible that resembles a PDW style stock, think MP5. I can't remember the name of that one off hand but it would be easy to find on any site selling braces. Both of those offerings come with a proprietary buffer tube that has to be used with them but they use standard buffers and springs. If you can't afford those offerings, both are around the $200 mark, the Tailhook Mod 1, made from solid aluminum, and SB Tactical SBM4, which I have on my pistol, are good to go. Those are both around the $115-120 mark. I'm not a fan of the Shockwave Blade. If you plan on shouldering the brace they can be painful and they don't have and way of countering the weight forward other than it's weight, if using as a brace. The Tailhook hooks under your arm and the SB Tacticals strap to it. The Blade just sits against your arm.
So much can be learned from just reading this forum and asking the right questions. Everyday I am amazed about how much I don't know about firearms and shooting. I just want to thank you guys for (rwhite135 and bradberry) for all your enlightening comments.
